Hertfordshire County Council awarded Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation status

Hertfordshire County Council awarded Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation status: Bronze award group

Hertfordshire County Council has been awarded Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) status by the Carbon Literacy Project, recognising the council’s commitment to sustainability and climate action across the workplace.

The accreditation highlights the council’s growing role as a leader in environmental awareness, ensuring staff at every level understand the impact of climate change and how to make positive, practical changes in their everyday work.

To achieve bronze status, the council:

  • Delivered certified Carbon Literacy training to over 200 staff, equipping them with knowledge about the carbon impacts of daily activities and the actions they can take to reduce emissions.
  • Embedded advocacy and engagement, encouraging colleagues to support a low-carbon culture and to pledge meaningful actions.
  • Provided evidence of impact, including communications, pledges, and sustainability initiatives, demonstrating the organisation’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
  • Registered the training programme with the Carbon Literacy Project, ensuring it is suitable for rollout across Hertfordshire County Council.

The recognition builds on last year’s Carbon Literacy Action Day in November 2024, which accelerated training and awareness across the organisation.

Cllr Adrian England, Executive Member for Sustainability at Hertfordshire County Council, said:

“We are proud to be recognised as a Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation. This award reflects the dedication of our staff and our shared ambition to build a greener, more sustainable Hertfordshire. Carbon Literacy training is helping us to empower colleagues with the knowledge and confidence to make a difference, and together we are creating a culture of climate responsibility that will support our communities for generations to come. The bonus with Carbon Literacy is that it helps us bring new purpose to every workstream/project and get more lifetime value from the materials we need to use, which is so important for efficiency."

The council now plans to build on this achievement by expanding Carbon Literacy training further, with the ambition of reaching silver status and beyond in the future.
