Hertfordshire County Council will be observing the national minute’s silence on Friday 24 February to mark the one-year anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The flag of Ukraine will be flown at full mast above County Hall, Hertford with a minute’s silence observed at 11am.
A candlelit vigil will also be held at County Hall at 6pm on Friday evening.
The evening event is open to anyone who wishes to attend, joining Hertfordshire’s Ukrainian community for the vigil and prayers led by the Rev. Alan Stewart, of St, Andrews Church, Hertford.
Chairman of Hertfordshire County Council, Councillor Annie Brewster, said:
“Friday is the first anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and we have consulted with the local Ukrainian community on how to mark the event.
“Flying the Ukrainian flag full mast from County Hall will send a clear signal of our enduring support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and is a mark of respect for the bravery and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people.
“The candlelit vigil and prayers show our support to Ukrainian families who have found refuge in Hertfordshire after fleeing their country and that they are a welcome and valued part of our community.
We are working to build a sustainable, inclusive and thriving Hertfordshire, as we deliver hundreds of services to the 1.2million people who live in the county.
We want to create a county where every resident thrives and achieves their aspirations, where economic growth, innovation and industry are supported, and our environment is protected for future generations.
Above all, we want to be a council that Hertfordshire’s people recognise as being on their side.
